Brewer bites back

Article Abstract:

Guinness Peat has put forward proposals for the rationalization of Young and Co's stock structure but the board of Young and Co has recommended that stockholders reject the proposal. The directors argue that there is no need to change the structure which does not affect the business's development. Guinness Peat holds a stake of some 18% in Young and Co. The Young family holds 60% of the votes through B stocks, but the directors may have to accept a change if A stock holders seek change.

The ties that bind

Article Abstract:

The UK brewing industry faces pressure of profits and reorganization costs following an investigation into differential prices to tenants and free houses. The investigation was carried out by the UK Office of Fair Trading (OFT). Differential prices may not be permitted in future, and this forecast has affected the share price of some UK brewers, and some brewers's costs would increase sharply if this were imposed. UK brewers complain that they are already hit by too much regulation.
