Build your own conglomerate

Article Abstract:

Investors are often too concerned about prices of the stocks they own, and not concerned enough about how well the underlying business is performing. This can lead investors to make erroneous buying or selling decisions. Short-term price movements are not significant. A stock portfolio can be valued in terms of how well its components are performing, rather than their stck prices. A portfolio can be seen in terms of a mini-conglomerate, and this gives a better idea of the performance of the portfolio.

Margarine markets strike again

Article Abstract:

The London Stock Exchange is moving more stocks to SETS, its electronic order book, and wide spreads are becoming a concern for investors. Average spreads have dropped with SETS, but this is not true for thin trading periods. Wide spreads could also become more common as a result of earlier opening to fit in with markets in mainland Europe. Investors can suffer if brokers buy when spreads are wide. Investors should remember that time is important, and they can protect themselves by using limit orders.
