Building societies - Should they branch out?

Article Abstract:

In Great Britain, building societies are opening more branch offices, while the number of branch operations by London clearing banks is declining. Despite this trend (which began in the 1970s), the number of British bank branches remains higher than the number of British building societies, and this is projected to be the case through the 1990s. Banks closing down branch operations (such as Barclays, which scheduled 500 shut-downs at the branch level by 1990) are opening more in-store automatic tellers and expect home banking to replace the need for branch operations. Although it is generally assumed that reducing branch operations means losing shareholders and depositors, this is not necessarily true.

Only big can be beautiful and profitable

Article Abstract:

Telecommunications companies, for years operated by their national governments, have begun to be privatized as result of the increasing international nature of the industry. British Telecom, AT & T, and the telecommunications companies of Italy, West Germany and the Netherlands are in various stages of privatization. Technological advances have also contributed to internationalism and increased competition in the telecommunication industry. Various European telecommunication companies are profiled, and their telecommunication services and equipment offerings are described.

Rental growth and new confidence heralds a boom; property values and real rents have been in decline during the 1980s. Now upward trends in the UK economy justify widespread refurbishment

Article Abstract:

There is evidence of recovery in the commercial rental market. Rents and property values have been flat, but there is hope for increases soon. There are many office buildings available for rent in London although office rents have not kept pace with inflation. Retail rentals have shown the greatest growth, but the yields have remained the lowest. Still property companies are on an upswing and investments in this sector are expected to increase.
