Can Australia restructure its failing economy?

Article Abstract:

Falling commodity prices have adversely affected the economy of Australia, a nation whose exports are 80 percent agricultural and mineral products. Australia's balance of payments is reminiscent of those experienced by Latin American countries, and currently the only industry that appears to offer employment growth opportunities is tourism. Australia's trade terms, protectionist policies, revised tax laws and probable upcoming debt crisis are discussed. Statistics related to economic indicators are also analyzed, including: the 8 to 9 percent inflation in Australia, the 60 percent devaluation of the Australian dollar since it began to float in 1983, the reduction in Australia's uppermost tax rate from 60 percent to 48 percent, the increase in Australia's external debt from $7.3 billion in 1980 to $53 billion in 1986, and Australian interest rates on bank loans that range from 15 to 20percent.
