Most of the credit card holding population in the UK pay above 20% APR and many cardholders carry a balance, with 56% planning to carry balances for six months, if not indefinitely. New credit companies have been entering the UK market since 1994, providing consumers with a wider choice and better rates. All companies offer facilities to switch balances from existing cards, and savings can often be dramatic. Store cards typically charge over 30% APR, and bank overdrafts can cost more than 18%.
