Cautious forecast for German meat

Article Abstract:

The German Agriculture Ministry forecasts that pork consumption will increase slightly to 3.88 million tonnes, with consumption at 4.58 million tonnes and per capita consumption at 40 kilograms for 2001. Beef production is believed to have dropped 2% to 1.32 million tonnes/year, with total consumption at about 1 million tonnes and per capita consumption down to 8 kilograms. Article also discusses the effects of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) and food and mouth disease disease on the meat market, and gives livestock numbers from the May census.

Meaty changes to German law

Article Abstract:

Changes in German meat hygiene laws permit regulation of slaughterhouse response to the discovery of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) cases and block meat exports by German businesses that ignore processing guidelines intended to prevent risk to humans. The Agriculture Ministry will now be able to ban or limit the handling of meat or export of meat into third countries.

Aus/NZ BSE import clampdown

Article Abstract:

Import controls will be tightened by New Zealand and Australia on beef products and beef, due to concern about mad cow disease. The planned measures are examined.
