Code name: Leapfrog

Article Abstract:

IBM is using a new computer concept to restore the its image as an industry leader in design and technology. IBM proposes to design a computer code named Leapfrog, which would showcase the company's design, research and engineering talent in a highly visible 'image' product. These computers can be used at a desk with a keyboard, taken to meetings, used to take notes with a pen and used to make presentations. Leapfrog's main body has a 24mm thick pen based tablet with a color display activated by a cordless pen and desk top base hidden underneath a pop-out keyboard. Leapfrog's desk top base has a three dimensional parallelogram form with lopped off corners giving it an illusionistic appearance.

Beware the tax code's double-edged sword

Article Abstract:

The tax code's lack of flexibility regarding the definition of temporary workers is affecting the hiring practices of design firms. The current law requires design firms to regard temporary employees as full-time employees. As a result, employers are forced to comply with the tax code by placing the workers on payroll or paying the temporary workers with cash under the table. The end result is loss of revenue, deprivation of worker's benefits and heavy tax burdens for small firms that choose to comply with the law. Designers should lobby for provisions that would allow hiring on short-term basis.
