Competition in markets with dominant firms: a note on the evidence from the Italian banking industry

Article Abstract:

A study of the Italian banking industry from 1988 to 2000 is presented. Eight of the banks disburse half of the total loans in the country and are larger than the rest of the banks in Italy. It is concluded that notwithstanding their dominance in the sector, these banks have been competitive in conducting their business.

Risk and hedging: do credit derivatives increase bank risk?

The possibility that the financial innovation process of credit derivative securities affect the banking sector in the United Kingdom is examined. The issues related to the bank regulation within the proposed model are discussed.
