AICPA position permits greater deferrals of software revenue
Article Abstract:
The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has launched Statement of Position (SOP) 97-2, Software Revenue Recognition, which is a new pronouncement that altered some of the provisions in SOP 91-1 even as it also seeks to address particular practice issues. Applicable to all entities that license, sell, lease or market computer software, SOP 97-2 aims to guide software firms regarding when and in what amounts revenue must be recognized for their activities. When adopted to aid financial reporting, SOP 97-2 may give rise to the deferral of accounting revenue. It may also help eliminate uncertainties in prior guidance for revenue reporting while firming up standards for revenue reporting. However, software firms may have to alter the way they structure software transactions if SOP 97-2 were to be adopted.

CLR Professional Software makes depreciation easier
Article Abstract:
CLR Professional Software recently launched a new computer program intended to make depreciation calculations easier and more efficient for tax planners. The product, the Depreciation System (DE), is also designed to enable users to plan for the needs and objectives of their clients. It offers more than 20 depreciation techniques and several report formats. It can produce an asset-retirement-to-date report, an asset-placed-in-service report, a depreciation report and a depreciation-comparison report. DE can be fully integrated with other CLR products, such as the Tax System and Financial Reporting. It is therefore possible for tax consultants to easily maintain a complete fixed-asset system for their clients. DE has a price tag of $395 for a single user and $595 for a site license.
