Corporate finance: joining the cut and thrust

Article Abstract:

Accountants in the UK are attracted to the corporate finance profession for it seems prestigious and offers high remuneration. Corporate finance requires an accountant to be very bright, have a minimum of a 2.1 degree, and be personable. Only young practitioners, those under the age of 30, typically make the transition to corporate finance. 3i Corporate Finance (London) manager Brian Livingston is an accountant with a law degree, which he feels is an ideal background for corporate finance. Livingston also believes that his previous experience with a small firm and Price Waterhouse was essential to his success. Livingston counsels accountants seeking a job in corporate finance to discover what they really want to do, talk to people in the job area they are interested in, and carefully think over a career change.

Accountants in charge

Article Abstract:

A 2006 survey reveals that several retirements among the top rank of executives in FTSE 100, as well as a change in constituents, resulted in the number of chief executive officers (CEOs) with an accountancy qualification falling to 20 from a record 24 the previous year, although accountants are still the dominant professional group. One significant finding is that in 2006 the decision of the CEOs to leave a company was often driven by lifestyle choices rather than by pressure from shareholders or company boards.

Suits you, sir

Article Abstract:

For newly-qualified accountants, retail has traditionally been an attractive and exciting industry in which to cut their accounting teeth. Although the retail industry has been in a downward turn since mid-2000, it still provides opportunities for careers in dynamic young companies that are willing to take risks with newly-qualified accountants.
