Dairy farmers' evaluation of dairy cooperatives

Article Abstract:

A study of dairy farmers in twelve southern states indicates that farmers are most likely to be pleased with milk-marketing cooperatives which hold down operating costs, provide them with high prices for their product, and assure them a market for their milk. Dairy farmers in Virginia were most pleased with their cooperatives, followed by those in Texas, Arkansas, and Florida. South Carolina farmers were least pleased. Bargaining-operation cooperatives were slightly less popular, probably because of their higher operating costs.
