Availability and cost of credit for small businesses: customer relationships and credit cooperatives

Article Abstract:

Significant differences have been found on the effects of bank-firm relationships on the availability of credit for a sample of Italian companies. Findings suggest that lending rates tend to increase for all banks except for members of local cooperative banks (CCB) and that CCB members enjoy easier access to credit compared to non members. Findings also support bank capture theories and that main differences in lending stem from banks' ownership structures.
