Decrease in back strength in asymmetric trunk postures

Article Abstract:

The asymmetric distribution of carried weights can reduce effective muscle force by up to 40%. However, this is dependent on the adopted posture and the plane of asymmetry. A study shows that rotation and lateroflexion situations should be avoided to maintain optimum force. Only one force reduction directionin a limited number of postures is evaluated, and extensions of this research is recommended for specific work situation applicability.

Article Abstract:

The participants in a roundtable discussion during the 11th International Ergonomic Assn Congress identified problem areas in participatory ergonomics. The panel stated that management in general has not yet realized the importance of ergonomic development. Employees themselves often do not see any need for improved ergonomics in the workplace. In addition, conflicts between management and labor greatly hinders ergonomic development.
