Designing America

Article Abstract:

President Clinton's transitional team called on leading design professionals to discuss ways that designers could contribute to the restoration of economic leadership and rebuilding of the nation. A panel composed of product and graphic designers, architects and urban planners participated in the meeting and came up with three broad initiatives calling for stronger cooperation between designers, manufacturers and investors, restoration of population centers into sustainable communities and the development of a design standard to encourage participation of designers in government.

Competing by design

Article Abstract:

The role of designers in providing a competitive edge to American-made products should be recognized. Designers can improve product quality, reduce manufacturing costs and lower the costs for consumers. To pursue this objective, designers are proposing the creation of a US Design Council and the implementation of a Strategic Design Initiative to improve the cooperation between designers, manufacturers, technologists and investors to put the US back in the forefront of international economic activity.

Editor's note

Article Abstract:

Designers should be actively involved in political initiatives that will affect the design industry if they want to institute attitude changes towards design in the government. They should not pin their hopes on proposed talks with Pres Clinton's transitional team on the formulation of a national design policy. However, it would also be a mistake to presume that the government is indifferent to the potential contribution of designers in shaping public policy.
