Designing an external financial information system
Article Abstract:
Designing a financial management information system for a bank environment involves three main points: selection of appropriate equipment; integration between system staffers and the bank; and selection of a hardware vendor. When choosing equipment, it is important to consider the size and complexity of the organization. There are three basic configurations to choose: terminal-based systems; microcomputer treasury workstation-based systems; or a direct computer-to-computer link. Computer integration considerations involve compatibility of educational and skill levels of the bank environment with the level of sophistication of the information systems itself. Issues in choosing a vendor include: sophisticated products; vendor commitment to service; geographic capability; and vendor commitment to products.

Paying carriers electronically: how shippers earn discounts
Article Abstract:
Deregulation, open competition among carriers, and low interest rates have contributed to changes in the way the cash manager handles payments to carriers. Careful use of electronic data interchange (EDI) can help cash and freight managers function more efficiently and profitably. EDI can generate sophisticated reports and help analyze traffic movements, making it easier for banks to pay and audit customer freight bills, avoid duplicate payments, and reformat data as needed.
