Doing the splits

Article Abstract:

Split capital investment trusts have performed well for United Kingdom investors in the two years to Sep 1998. Yields are attractive. A number of these trusts are scheduled to wind up and this has meant an increase in investor interest. The spilt capital trust new issue market is difficult, since corporate financiers have to assess the balance between growth in equity markets and interest rate forecasts in order to combine stock classes in the best way.

Left behind in the bull rush

Article Abstract:

Stock warrants have tended not to perform especially well and this is partly because investment trusts have not performed as well as the FT-SE 100. Investment trusts using warrants tend to focus on medium and smaller firms which have not performed as well as big firms from summer to fall 1996. Trust discounts have also widened. Warrant investors have few opportunities excluding trusts. Warrants can provide inexpensive exposure to equities.

Tax breaks galore - if you're happy with the extra risk

Article Abstract:

Venture capital trusts (VCTs) offer tax benefits to British investors, though they also involve risk. There is both income tax relief and the chance to defer capital gains tax liabilities from investments elsewhere. The tax shelter market has shown most interest in VCTs which have yet to prove their potential as investments. Five new funds are seeking to raise some 50 million pounds sterling and the offer periods could be extended.
