EU membership offers solution to division
Article Abstract:
Cyprus is negotiating with the European Union (EU) over full membership and this may help the island overcome problems caused by partition. Two thirds of Cyprus is controlled by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus which sought to join the EU in 1990. Turkey is the only country which does not recognise this government. The Greek region of Cyprus has increased trade with the EU following the initial phase of a customs union. Greece is seeking to pressure Turkey over Cyprus by using a veto against Turkey and the EU forming a customs union.

Agriculture: EU central to export growth
Article Abstract:
Cyprus should see some benefit to its agricultural sector from membership of the European Union (EU). Poor soil and problems with water supplies affecte production as do labor shortages in southern Cyprus and small landholdings. The occupation of northern Cyprus has also meant the loss of good land. The customs union with the EU already covers 43 products but some temperate products are excluded. This will change with full membership. Public sector bodies have helped market Cypriot produce.
