Effect of row width on herbicide and cultivation requirements in row crops

Article Abstract:

The profitability of row crop production has been reduced by low prices for agricultural commodities and by high production costs. The extensive use of herbicides in row crop production also has the negative effect of environmental damage. Research into row width reveals that narrow rows are more beneficial than are the traditional wide rows used in row corp production. Crops grown in narrow rows provide more shade for seedlings and require lower levels of herbicides and interrow cultivation than do crops grown in wider rows.

Economic and environmental considerations for nitrogen management in the mid-Atlantic coastal plain

Article Abstract:

The results of an agricultural research case study in eastern Virginia supports the thesis that the pollution of ground and surface water by farms can be reduced by replacing inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer with organic N fertilizer. The use of organic N fertilizer, in addition to reducing pollution, likely will provide economic benefits as the price of inorganic N fertilizer rises. Research results indicate that the N cycle must be considered fully in research into N management on farms.

Integrated resource management for sustained crop production in arid regions of India

Article Abstract:

Major parts of the Indian subcontinent are arid, and the agricultural production of the Indian region of west Rajasthan suffers from aridity, erratic rainfalls, a high rate of evaporation and poor soil fertility. Agricultural research indicates that the use of agrihorticultural systems, agroforestry and silvipastoral systems incorporating integrated nutrient and moisture management techniques can support sustainable crop and biomass production.
