Electricity: fall overdone

Article Abstract:

UK electric utilities are likely to see prices tightened by theregulator, but this will have a limited impact on their share prices, according to Smith NewCourt. Companies may have to pay a customer rebate, but companies can appeal to theMonopolies and Mergers Commission (MMC) on an individual basis. Radical action from theregulator is not likely since such a move would not be easy to defend. Share prices are likely tobe affected by uncertainty in the short term, but could be undervalued for the longerterm.

Chaos threat may put competition on hold

Article Abstract:

Competition in the United Kingdom electricity market may be delayed due to lack of preparedness of the companies involved. Competition for domestic supply is scheduled to start from April 1998 and four companies are likely to be prepared. Inadequate testing of computer systems could affect the project especially since problems with one company could hit the system as a whole. The margins for domestic supply are tight and could be hit further by competition.

Running against the clock

Article Abstract:

Competition is to be introduced on a large scale in the UK electricity industry from 1998, when domestic customers should be able to select their suppliers. The regional electric companies (Recs) hold local monopolies so have little reason to push for change, and the industry regulator, Stephen Littlechild, has not always had the support of the government. The Recs will have to invest in new systems though there is uncertainty as to how they will function.
