FAST and loose

Article Abstract:

Some of the approaches taken by the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST) and the Business Software Alliance (BSA) in dealing with software theft are questionable. The BSA is an international association leading software publishers operating against software theft in the UK, with the help of the locally-based FAST. These two groups may have overly magnified the extent of software theft in the UK and are yet to address critical issues on software. Some of these issues involve restrictive software licenses, protection mechanisms in software that limit their use, and royalties demanded by software publishers for software applications developed using their products. However, the European Community Directive 91/250, which is due for implementation in the UK within 1992, addresses these issues on software acquisition, use and development.
