Electronic share settlement: handle with care

Article Abstract:

The new UK electronic share settlement system called Crest will be operating from Jul 15 1996. Private investors can use sponsored membership but this may cost between 50 pounds sterling and 100 pounds sterling annually. Sponsored membership may not be offered by all brokers and some will not initially offer it. Investors can wait until the majority of UK companies have moved to Crest prior to switching, which will allow them to move all their shares at once, advises Capel-Cure Myers.

Market-makers won't just lie down and die

Article Abstract:

A new share trading system is being launched on the UK stock exchange which will permit private investors to deal without using wholesalers or market makers. It is unclear whether the new system will treat private investors more fairly since the details have yet to be decided. The final design will be published by the Stock Exchange in spring 1997. Stockbrokers tend to use market makers to sell shares and the new system aims to put buyers in touch with sellers.
