An old wives' tale

Article Abstract:

Many taxpayers have forgotten one particularly obscure national insurance by-law that was passed in 1975 under the Labor government of James Callaghan. This law involved transitional rules for Class 2 National Insurance contributions (NICs) which allowed married women and employed widows the right not to pay employee contributions and instead rely on their spouses' contributions to claim benefits. Twenty years after this obscure law was passed, problems arising from it are cropping for those women who chose not to pay contributions. Unfortunately for these women, the Contributions Agency has decided to vigorously pursue these women, requesting that they now pay contributions if they are unable to present their registration certificates for this long-forgotten Class 2 NICs.
