Tex is involved in panelling and boards, engineering and plastics. The company saw an improvement in these three divisions for 1996 to 1997 and total operating profit for continuing operations rose by 130% in this period. The company is seeking to grow both organically and through acquisitions. The strong pound sterling has affected the company, since foreign sales account for 37% of Tex's turnover, but cheaper sources such as the Czech Republic are being used for components.

FKI has carried out a numberof acquisitions such as Wright, which produces strom doors, HSEPG, an electric power group, and Marelli, an Italian producer of electric motors. The company has invested funds raised from a rights issue in 1995 and FKI is focusing on organic growth after these acquisitions. Profits have been affected by start-up costs for the automotive business. The company could make disposals and reinvest the funds in another activity.
