Furniture
Article Abstract:
Furniture design, at the end of the 20th century, combines modernist forms with human and ecological issues. An array of products, such as Breeze chair, Venetian glass lamps, and Obi Woven fabrics, demonstrate the way functionalism and aestheticism are matched. Workplace habits and needs also find prominence in designs, giving furniture a flexibility and mobility. While Thai linen is a winner of Best of Category award in the first category, Campus School Furniture System is a winner in the second category.

Consumer products
Article Abstract:
About 450 products were entered in the 44th Annual Design Review Consumer products category where Aaron Betsky, Tim Parsey and Gianfranco Zaccai served as jurors. Zaccai was particularly impressed with the emerging design trend which has changed from being rational to silly and, finally, to the funny yet provocative. Parsey considers soulfulness and humor as his criteria for judging while Betsky is impressed with the new methods and materials used for the entrees. The award-winning products are presented.

Beyond the bullet
Article Abstract:
Industrial designer Hiroyuki Wakabayashi was inspired by science fiction films when he created the shape of a commuter train for the Nankai Rail System. The train sports a front end reminiscent of Darth Vader's mask in the film 'Star Wars,' in contrast to the modernist streamlining that has characterized Japanese high-speed trains. Meanwhile, the interiors are as luxurious as first-class sections in airplanes, with its pastel-colored walls and wood-textured surfaces.
