General Motors

Article Abstract:

General Motors has suffered a fall in its share price despite a rise in sales and earnings. The group's overseas operations accounted for some 33% of profits and about a fifth of sales. Poor profitability is a problem in the US, though many plants are working at full capacity. The group's US operations moved into profit from 1993 but there was a loss for 3rd qtr 1994 which management called a temporary aberration. The group has made progress, and has further challenges to face.

General Motors

Article Abstract:

General Motors saw its earnings for 1st qtr 1996 affected by a strike at a plant producing brakes for cars. The company increased plant utilization and reduced costs after the strike which cost some $900 million. Overseas automobile profits dropped and higher costs for labor and materials in Latin America, and currency issues were factors affecting this. Model replacements will boost costs but should also help the company increase its market share.
