Geographic scope, product diversification, and the corporate performance of Japanese firms
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to investigate internationalizations of companies in terms of the relationship between product diversification, geographic scope and performance. It employed a path analytic methodology to consider the effects of the determinants of international production on both geographic scope and performance. Six main hypotheses were developed. The causal research model was tested with data on the organizational performance of a sample of 399 publicly listed Japanese manufacturing companies. Among other results, it was found that geographic scope and proprietary assets especially in the more highly product diversified Japanese firms were strongly, positively linked with the performance of these companies.
