Germany looks back on BSE year
Article Abstract:
In the last 12 months, Germany has undertaken several safeguards and protections against bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), including testing all cattle over 24 months of age and banning meat and bone meal in feed. In addition, one of the government's primary research goals is to develop a BSE test for live and younger animals as soon as possible.

Salmonella in a fifth of supermarket minced meat samples
Article Abstract:
Findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 18, 2001, that stated one in five samples of supermarket minced meat and poultry contained Salmonella bacteria. In addition, most strains were resistant to antibiotics, which is mainly used to shield animals from the disease and not to help sick livestock.

Finger of suspicion swings back to scrapie
Article Abstract:
Research on mad cow disease is examined in detail. The practice of feeding weaning calves with meat and bonemeal may have led to scrapie from sheep being transmitted to cattle.
