Getting to first base

Article Abstract:

Investors will benefit from professional training before investing in options, and they can obtain this from a number of sources in the United Kingdom. Many books available in the UK are geared to US investors, but they can still be useful for UK investors, though the UK market is less liquid and there are higher commission charges. Courses are also available and they should not promise that investing in options will bring certain riches. Technical analysis can also help investors, who can enrol on courses to study this subject.

Hedging your bets

Article Abstract:

Options can be used to make a profit, and they can also be used to insure against a loss. Hedging can be used to protect against losses, without the need to sell underlying stocks, if investors fear that the market could fall. The hedge can give rise to a profit which offsets the loss that arises from the portfolio's underlying value dropping. The price of the option is the price of the protection and this offsets any profits. Option prices may be called premiums, showing a similarity with insurance.
