Glasgow's West End comes of age
Article Abstract:
Tay Homes PLC is one of the top 20 private housing developers in the UK. In 1992, it was able to raise its turnover, for the eighth consecutive time, to 76.2 million pounds sterling and increase its dividend by 10%. The company's continuous success can be attributed to its tradition of innovation in the design of its development layout and product, mostly with the involvement of clients. Tay Homes' decision to build six mansions at Hyndland Gate in Glasgow's West End is likewise seen as an innovative and courageous move as most developers have traditionally eschewed the city location for their mansions. After concentrating on the top and middlesegment of the market, Tay Homes plans to expand its services to the lower end of the market. Its focus on private house development and tight management system have served well in the success of the company amidst a recessionary environment.

Hard times, easy terms
Article Abstract:
The recession resulted in both hard times and opportunities for property development in Scotland. In Edinburgh, 1991 saw only a few office developments. Glasgow was more fortunate in facilitating a series of successful high-rent placements. The depressed state of the real estate industry in Edinburgh and Glasgow was evident from the large areas of second-hand space being let in the market. Aberdeen successfully weathered the effects of the recession and is experiencing a prosperous economy because of the area's oil industries. The recession has prompted Scottish companies to establish centralized storage and distribution centers and encouraged them to purchase rather than rent properties because of low rates of interest. Real estate companies have refrained from active development to focus more on the management of their existing portfolios.
