Glaxo searches for an ulcer remedy

Article Abstract:

Glaxo-Wellcome has seen its sales and profits boosted by the drug Zantac, but the US patent fot this drug expires in 1997. The company has a number of options such as promoting its Zantac brand or selling generic drugs. A more effective course of action would be to develop new drugs. The company has a number of possibilities including an influenza remedy which is in trials. The acquisition of Wellcome by Glaxo has also helped ease the transition from Zantac.

Article Abstract:

SmithKline Beecham (SB) has reported a rise in profit of 14% for 2nd qtr 1996 and has achieved good growth in sales of new drugs. New drugs represented 32% of total sales of pharmaceuticals which stood at 1.14 billion pounds sterling. Spending on research and capital projects has been high which has put margins under pressure. There are also weaknesses in clinical labs testing where trading profits dropped in 1st half 1996.
