Global markets: fire or ice
Article Abstract:
Share prices tend to collapse because interest rates have risen, but they may also collapse because profits collapse and deflation looms, according to Morgan Stanley's Barton Biggs. Japanese deflation led to a drop in share prices in that country from 1991 to 1995. Japanese growth is weak and this could affect exports from other Asian countries. US consumers may cease to reduce borrowing by cutting spending. Tight fiscal policy, high wages and job losses from restructuring could affect European demand. A growth slowdown would not affect equities unduly, but deflation would cause a drop in share prices.

Emerging markets: a better year
Article Abstract:
Emerging markets should perform better in 1996 than they have in 1995, according to ING Barings' Global Strategy Unit. Share prices have dropped in emerging markets in 1995 and this means that investors can buy shares of good value. A growth in liquidity is likely following the purchase of dollars by the Bank of Japan, and this liquidity growth should help emerging markets. Easterm Europe is likely to perform especially well since prices are low and fundamentals are good.

The dubious charms of emerging markets
Article Abstract:
Emerging markets in general have performed worse than the FTSE All-Share index in the three years to Dec 1997, but some emerging markets have performed much better, including Turkey and Portugal. Investment in assets should either cut risk levels or boost returns, and investments in emerging markets have not performed either of these functions. They have tended to be correlated with UK stock prices, but this could end, and returns from emerging markets may improve.
