Going out with a continental bang

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom investors using personal equity plans (Peps) have not had limits placed on their holdings by the Chancellor in his 1998 Budget. Peps are to be replaced by individual savings accounts in 1999, so investors will be setting up final Peps in 1998 to 1999. Investors have not been deterred by the high level of UK stock prices and the danger of a price fall, but they could consider trusts investing in stocks from mainland Europe. The euro currency should have a beneficial impact on mainland European companies.

Foreign parts in the portfolio

Article Abstract:

UK investors may want to be cautious about investing in UK shares in 1997, since share prices have risen so much. There are no forecasts that UK share prices will crash, but there is uncertainty, especially since a general election will be held in 1997. A cash unit trust could be used on a temporary basis as an alternative to shares, or investors could look abroad. European unit trusts could perform well in 1997. Elsewhere, share prices could be hit by a drop in US prices, but this is only likely to be short term.
