Good governance and the payment debate

Article Abstract:

Charity boards should take a long-term view and aim for unity, according to John Carver, a charity consultant. The issue of governance has become a subject of debate in the UK. Carver sees generalists as most useful on boards of charities. Smaller charities tend to have problems in recruiting the right people since they lack contacts. Payment is becoming an issue as the work of trustees becomes increasingly professionalised. Guidelines on this subject are being relaxed by the Charities Commission which had previously opposed payment other than for expenses.
