Hard times for high rollers

Article Abstract:

The market for luxuries has been affected by the Asian crisis and other factors. Asprey has been affected by a drop in spending by family members of the Sultan of Brunei, especially the Sultan's brother, Prince Jefri Bolkiah, while De Beers has been affected by a drop in demand for diamonds in Japan. Americans cashing in equity investments are tending to give funds to charity of churches. The crisis in Asia is an immediate problem for many companies in this sector. Companies are reacting in different ways. Bulgari is broadening its range to include more affordable products, and Vendome Luxury Group aims to reduce costs by making watch components in Switzerland.

Weather to put the wind up investors

Article Abstract:

El Nino has caused more storms in the US and Peru, and this is an example of natural disasters than can prove expensive for insurers. Weather affects demand for gas. Natural disasters may become more serious as populations become more concentrated in urban areas. Weather can affect water supply, harvests and travel companies. The drop in output from agriculture and fishing in Peru due to El Nino is likely to reduce economic growth in 1998, and coffee harvests in Brazil will rise, but drop elsewhere.

Legal lottery

Article Abstract:

Camelot is seeking to ban a competing lottery-style game called 49's, and is taking legal action against William Hill, Ladbroke and Coral. The three companies set up 49's Ltd and argue that the game is not a lottery. The game accounts for some 4% of Coral's turnover. The British Amusement Catering Trades Association argues that the gambling industry should be more deregulated. The age limit for Camelot scratch cards, at 16-years-old, is younger than the 18-years-old limit imposed on bookmakers.
