Asia: China on the turn

Article Abstract:

China should boost world economic activity in 1997 as it emerges from a low point of the business cycle, according to BZW. The Pacific Basin thus becomes more attractive to investors. This is especially true since developed economies are seeking to cut their budget deficits which will dampen growth, and demographic factors mean that there will be more emphasis on saving and less on consumption. Taiwan and Korea are seen as especially attractive in the region.

Asian emerging markets have been affected by problems in a number of countries especially Thailand and S Korea. Good returns are not as easy to obtain in Asia as previously and there is concern about a number of factors including overcapacity in some industries and the impact of rises in US interest rates.
