Housebuilders: going strong

Article Abstract:

UK housebuilders are benefiting from a rise in demand, and prices have risen from Jul 1995. The industry faced a drop in consumer confidence and sales after spring 1995, and housing starts fell. Reductions in taxes, interest rates, and the cost of mortgages should help the industry in 1996. Housebuilders will be able to cease offering incentives if demand continues to rise. There is a danger that they could pay too much for land, but strong demand would benefit companies such as Berkeley, Beazer and Redrow with ample land supplies and strong balance sheets.

Housebuilders awake from their nightmare

Article Abstract:

The UK construction industry may undergo a recovery with a rise in real incomes and low interest rates. New houses account for 13% of total house sales in 1995, up from 11% in 1994, and the drop in deposits from purchasers appears to be easing off. Larger housebuilders appear to be performing better than smaller companies. Transactions should increase due to labor mobility and divorces, and this should push up prices. A drop in costs such as raw materials and land may also help housebuilders in 1996.
