How to become a CEO: David M. Roderick, USX Corporation
Article Abstract:
David Roderick has been chairman and chief executive of USX Corp. (formerly U.S. Steel) since 1979. Roderick's early years, his career in the Marines and his graduation from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in finance are briefly described, prior to an analysis of his career development and management theories. Roderick believes a financial background is a prerequisite to becoming a chief executive, because financial knowledge makes a person more objective. Roderick's role in the U.S. Steel - Texas Oil and Gas merger and the acquisition of Marathon Oil by USX is described in terms of corporate diversification policies. Also described are Roderick's handling of a steelworkers' strike, his plans for future acquisitions, and the possibility of a corporate reorganization at USX as an anti-takeover measure in response to rumored interest on the part of Carl Icahn.

Technology: How is it changing the CFO's job?
Article Abstract:
A recent FE magazine survey polled chief financial officers (CFOs) on information technology (IT) investments, expenditures, applications, and the impact of IT on the financial management function. Regardless of size or industry, chief financial officers continue to be responsible for the management of IT in most U.S. and Canadian companies. The effect of IT on the role of the CFO was surveyed; 98 percent of the respondents said that managing IT would expand the skills base needed to be a CFO. The effect of IT on an organization was also surveyed; areas in which IT may impact an organization include the decision-making process, job skills required, workplace environment, and internal communications. Significant survey results and selected comments from follow-up interviews are reported.
