How to win at meetings

Article Abstract:

Accountants can succeed at business meetings by preparing themselves to handle confrontations and hostility and by preparing themselves to win confrontations with words. In order to prevail in business meetings and overcome hostility or opposition, accountants must prepare their case, understand the subject thoroughly, and practice techniques for successfully handling meetings, such as learning how to cope with people's anger or irritation. When preparing for a meeting, accountants must know their audience, know what they want, and determine how they can win their support. Knowledge and preparation are the keys to successfully preparing for a meeting. When under attack, accountants should listen, empathize, offer alternatives, and follow up any agreements by confirming the agreements in writing.

Employment law: a working guide

Article Abstract:

UK businesses must be cognizant of the legal definition of an employee in order to avoid infringing on employees' rights as mandated by law. Employees' rights come from employment contracts or from statutory protection, increasingly provided by the courts and the European Community. In employment law cases, courts primarily will look to the employment contract, so firms should ensure that their contracts have been updated. The UK Employment Bill of 1989/90 contains many key features, including: the elimination of discrimination against union and non-union employees, the creation of new restrictions on secondary action, and the strengthening of liabilities against unions for unauthorized actions.
