Hunter proposes $20 billion supplemental defense budget

Article Abstract:

Rep. Duncan Hunter is poised to propose a $20 billion supplemental defense budget to aid the troops in Iraq and provide protection for U.S. forces such as body armor over the next three months until a major defense supplemental budget can be proposed and enacted in 2005. Democrats have alleged that President Bush did not include funds for military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in the budget proposal for fiscal year ending September 30, 2005 due to the already inflated size of the budget deficit and for fear of deriving criticism from Democratic presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry who is has been hitting Bush on the costs of the war in Iraq.

Lawmakers' budgeting plan would squeeze weapons funding

Article Abstract:

The key lawmakers in congress are pressurizing the Department of Defense (DoD) to stop the use of supplemental budgets, a move that would intensify the already formidable forces to restrict spending on weapons platforms. It is analyzed that the weapons procurement programs would be squeezed if about $80 million must be added to the regular overall request of the department of defense.
