Tenneco Packaging Specialty Products, a manufacturing facility based in Clayton, NJ, proved that determining an efficient operating methodology is instrumental in enhancing the production levels of firms. Through the adoption of a productivity improvement project, Tenneco made significant improvements not only in employee safety but also in the production of high-quality of products. In 1996, the plant earned the Tenneco Award for safety and received certifications for both the ISO 9002 and QS-9000 standards.

Managing for productivity: one-third of the job

Organizational growth requires the successful integration of productivity management, employee morale and customer satisfaction. Organizational policies should be employee-friendly and should be evaluated on a regular basis. Employees are motivated to perform well and produce more, given the appropriate benefits and incentives. High-quality products and services result in customer satisfaction. The three aspects produce organizational success when managed appropriately.

Measuring productivity on a value basis
Article Abstract:
Traditional productivity measures have proven to be ineffective since these encourage manufacturing managers to focus on increasing productivity and ignore the demands of customers and owners. Managers can avoid the pitfalls of traditional measures by finding new ways of measuring productivity. They must also develop strategies that can create value for customers and owners. The experiences of three corporations are discussed.
