Industry views on methods of improving the business climate for food stores: the case of New Jersey

Article Abstract:

Development of food store retailing relies on the creation of a public policy that will ensure effective operation. A case study of New Jersey's food stores reveals that despite of its vast consumer market, food store business declined for the past years due to several operational barriers like business cost, liability suits, and excessive regulations. Policy reform is needed to provide a favorable business environment for food stores and to increase competitiveness of firms.

The production structure of food retailing in the United States: an initial inquiry

Article Abstract:

The production structure of the US food retailing industry was investigated, using a transcendental logarithmic cost function to analyze the substitution patterns among the different components of the retail trade. These components are labor, capital and energy inputs. Results showed that these three components are all substitutes for each other. However, it was also shown that energy and capital can be substituted more for each other than any other combination of input.
