Instem: bid on the way?

Instem is a UK computer systems supplier which has a 35% stake held by Dobson Park Industries, which in turn is owned by Harnischfeger. Instem reported a drop in profit for 1st half 1996. The company produces components for producers of capital equipment, sells database systems and supplies a systems integrator for utilities. The company has never reported a loss since it was floated in 1984. Shareholders could benefit if Harnischfeger decides to restructure or sell Instem.

US computer concern IBM has seen a recovery in its financial position recently, and is no longer in danger of collapsing completely. In 1994, revenues rose by 7%, the first increase since 1990, and expenses were reduced by $3.5 billion. There has been strong demand for mainframe computers and storage products, but the company will have to improve its performance in the personal computer sector if its future is to be really secure.
