Investors' tax-free armoury

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom savers and investors can use National Savings certificates, or tax exempt special savings accounts (Tessas) for saving cash. Personal equity plans (Peps) are for investors in stocks. Both Tessas and Peps are to be replaced by Isas, or individual savings accounts. There are also venture capital trusts specialising in smaller companies, which offer tax advantages, as do enterprise investment schemes. Isas are under development and a provisional ceiling of 50,000 pounds sterling has been set, which could be increased.

Savers have nothing to lose but their chains

Article Abstract:

There are a number of traps for unwary savers and investors in the United Kingdom financial services industry. These include high charges for overdrafts with low interest rates for current account holders in credit. Savers with endowment policies may cancel them early and pay high commission charges. One solution for older policies is to sell them through the second hand market. Guaranteed products may charge a lot for protection, and investors may be better off with other low-risk products like some tracker funds.

Twelve more busy months for savers and investors

Article Abstract:

A number of events will affect United Kingdom investors and savers in 1998. The government will develop plans for stakeholder pensions, individual savings accounts and funding long term care. A Budget is likely for Mar 1998 and could bring changes to inheritance tax and capital gains tax, as well as a reduction to mortgage interest relief. Tax bills for 1996 to 1997 have to be settled by the end of Jan 1998. Meanwhile, Halifax and Edward Jones are entering the mass market for stockbroking services.
