Japanese banks jolting syndicate pools

Article Abstract:

Japanese banks are staying away from syndicate pools due to the economic slump, and the move is starting to affect the US financial services industry. Japanese banks are finding it more difficult and expensive to obtain credit and so are avoiding syndicate pools despite the government's recent moves toward positive banking reform. The situation may worsen as new regulations take effect.

U.S. banks eye more CLOs

Article Abstract:

Collateralized loan obligations (CLOs) are gaining in popularity due to increased return on equity. Investment-grade loans tie up a large amount of capital. Using a CLO securitization, a bank can bring down the 8% capital requirement to nearly 3%, sending returns up from 4% to around 12%. NationsBanc Montgomery Securities underwrote a $4 billion CLO for parent NationsBank.

First Union Corp. and Wachovia Corp. have announced plans to merge, with the new bank taking Wachovia's name. In the next 3-5 years it expects its retail business to decrease by 6-10% and its brokerage and wealth management to increase by up to 15%.
