Let it glow

Article Abstract:

New technologies are allowing architects to create more complex lighting systems that can literally paint entire facades with color as well as blur the distinction between indoors and outdoors. Examples include the Poole Arts Centre in England, which is enveloped in blue, aquamarine, purple and magenta light; the ERCO Leuchten GmbH building in Germany, which can be experienced as artwork from the outside given its more than 250 lighting scenes; the Gannett/USA Today building in McLean, Virginia, featuring two illuminated elevator shafts that change color and are visible from outside; and interactive lighting columns at England's Winchester Cathedral, which allow visitors to change the color and animation of lights.

Unisex sells

Article Abstract:

Companies looking for a bigger market share are being challenged not only to adapt generic products to specific consumers, but conversely, to move wares, and colors, that traditionally skew either masculine or feminine toward an elegant compromise. A discussion on several products that were branded or designed to breach the gender divide includes Calvin Klein's unisex CK One scent, Burton's range of snowboards, and Samsung's Z5 portable MP3 player.
