Article Abstract:
Newsquest plans a flotation on the London Stock Exchange in Oct 1997 and the enterprise value is estimated at some 700 million pounds sterling. The company was set up in 1996 following a leveraged management buy-out. Newsquest publishes 173 regional titles including free papers, and has acquired Westminster Press. The flotation will allow interest charges to be reduced as well as helping to fund the company's growth. The company reported a profit of 36 million pounds sterling for 1st half 1997.

Home Counties Newspapers: classic run

Home Counties Newspapers has sold a 3.5% stake in Classic FM and has a new shareholder with a 27.5% stake in the company, Andrew Knight. The company is 40.2% owned by Bill Gibbs, the chairman, and his family. Andrew Knight acquired a 24.5% stake in Home Counties from EMAP. Home Counties' share price has risen and there is speculation that the Gibbs family could sell some of its stake in the company. Other UK media companies have been the subject of speculation in the two years to 1996.

U News gets approval
Article Abstract:
United News and Media has been more in favor with stockbrokers since its results were released in Mar 1998. Four brokers from a sample of six rate the company's stocks a buy, and two rate them a hold. The buyers include Merrill Lynch, and Greig Middleton, which sees the stocks as offering good value. Panmure Gordon and Nikko Securities are also buyers. NatWest and SG Securities are the holders, with the latter concerned about the impact of a strong pound sterling.
