Long-term care - a growing benefit area

Article Abstract:

Long-term care is an area of employee benefits that will experience significant growth in the next few years as the number of people in the US over the age of 65 increases. Long-term care refers to the health and social services provided to disabled and chronically ill people. Given the high costs of long-term services, some companies are now providing employees with long-term care insurance. One of the first employers in the country to provide long-term care coverage to employees and to the spouses and parents of employees, is American Express Travel Related Services Co. Employees pay the full cost of coverage through after-tax payroll deductions. The company also has an elder care referral service.

HMO: the activation process

Article Abstract:

HMO 'activation' refers to the moment that a qualified health maintenance organization presents its program to an employer for employee consideration. At that time, the employer must give the HMO a 'fair shake' against its prevailing health insurance programs. The HMO must approach the employer in a prescribed manner, with complete materials and within a certain time frame. Specific guidelines govern who is eligible for the program. Once timing requirements are met, the HMO must also satisfy 12 more criteria before its offer is considered valid. One such criterion is that the HMO list the hospitals where HMO members will be provided basic and supplemental health services.

Elder care - a growing concern

Article Abstract:

The need to care for an aging relative presents problems for many employees. Some companies are aware of the situation and offer informal and formal benefits to this group. Information about available community services can be obtained for employees from social service groups and outside professionals. Flexible hours and scheduling can alleviate some conflicts about time. Long-term care benefit plans are offered as a benefit by some companies to active and retired workers. The efforts of seven employers to help employees with their care problems are reported.
