Man the lifeboats
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom water utilities are often involved in other activities which are less subject to regulation than is water supply, and this is proving important at a time when a regulatory review is underway for water. Some companies are moving into waste management, while others are carrying out water supply projects abroad. Meanwhile, Hyder may sell energy supply operations, a move that poses questions for the strategy of moving into other utilities. Water companies are under more pressure to keep prices low after a period when they have been allowed to raise prices rapidly.

Ofwat muddies the water
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom water utilities have yet to assess the implications of a consultation paper from the industry regulator, Ofwat. Consumers are likely to see drops in prices, but many decisions have yet to be taken, and companies have to submit their business plans to the regulator. Stockholders' dividends could be affected by price cuts. The abilities of water companies to achieve efficiency gains will affect their performance.
