Mergers and acquisitions

Article Abstract:

Merger and acquisition activity in 1995 in Australia's mining industry demonstrated that the country has begun to adopt sophisticated finance techniques. The acquisition of Pancontinental by RGC and Goldfields was the first simultaneous hostile takeover and initial public offering, involving funding through debt securities. The CRA and RTZ merger required regulatory authority approval and agreements so that the two companies could hold operating assets directly.

BHP proposes to lighten debt load with A$3 billion MTN

Article Abstract:

The A$6 billion debt accrued by BHP caused the Australian resource company to rethink its management techniques. A new board, expenditure cuts, and the establishment of a A$3 billion domestic medium-term note are all measures taken to reduce the debt. The note, one of the largest on the market, is also expected to give BHP longer maturities and a broader base of investors for future funding programs.
