Millennium blues

Article Abstract:

Many computer programs are expected to fail in the year 2000 because they were programmed such that they will interpret '00' as 1900 or make other erroneous assumptions. Disasters related to the date-change problem are foreseen to cause enormous legal problems and to drive between 1% to 5% of all companies out of business. In the UK, the Companies (Millennium Computer Compliance) Bill was recently introduced to compel companies to assess their capability to deal with the problem and report on the measures they plan to take. The proposed legislation enjoys the support of a number of major companies, including British Airways, SmithKline Beecham and Bass. Several steps are recommended to those in charge of addressing the Year 2000 problem.

The procurement problem

Article Abstract:

Rapidly changing technologies are making office-equipment procurement difficult. A single incorrect purchasing decision can cripple an organization as the fast pace of technological evolution, specifically in the field of information technology (IT), can quickly render pieces of equipment obsolete. Being of little use and expensive to maintain, obsolescent office equipment represent corporate dead weight. Management of such crippling costs of technological change can be achieved via different approaches, including leasing, renting and facilities management. Choosing the approach that best fits the needs of an organization requires the combined help of IT specialists, financial experts and corporate strategists.
